💡 Why consecutive discounts don't add up directly:
30% off + 20% off does not equal 50% off. The 20% coupon only applies to the remaining balance ($70) after the initial 30% reduction, yielding a 44% total discount.

How Double & Consecutive Discounts Work
When a department store or online retailer advertises a deal such as "Take an extra 20% off all clearance items already marked down 30%", shoppers often mistakenly add the percentages together (30% + 20% = 50%).
In reality, the second discount is applied only to the reduced price, not the original starting price.
The Double Discount Mathematical Formula
Step 1: Price After 1st Discount = Original × (1 − D1)
Step 2: Final Price = Price After 1st Discount × (1 − D2)
True Total Discount Rate = 1 − [(1 − D1) × (1 − D2)]
Step 2: Final Price = Price After 1st Discount × (1 − D2)
True Total Discount Rate = 1 − [(1 − D1) × (1 − D2)]
For a 30% discount followed by a 20% discount: 1 - [(0.70) × (0.80)] = 1 - 0.56 = 0.44 = 44% total discount.
